Despite hitting the crossbar on three occasions in a scoreless match on Thursday, Colorado College never lost faith.
The Tigers kept attacking and ultimately saw their persistence pay off in a 2-0 victory over the University of Northern Colorado at Stewart Field.
The triumph extended CC's undefeated streak to five games (3-0-2) and improved its overall record to 4-1-2 heading into Sunday's match at home against No. 13-ranked Oklahoma State University.
“We translated what we've been working on in practice into our game today,” said head coach
Geoff Bennett. “We hit the crossbar a few times but we never got frustrated, and to play that well against such a good Northern Colorado team bodes very well for us. Everything's going in a positive direction right now. We just need to make sure we keep it that way.”
Freshman midfielder
Madison Whitehead struck for the game winner early in the second half, one-timing
Brittney Lyman's crossing attempt from deep on the right side that eluded the hands of leaping UNC keeper Kirstin Salminen before reaching a charging Whitehead on the doorstep of the net.
Junior
Caitlin Hulyo finished with six saves while posting her fourth shutout of the season and 14th of her collegiate career.
Whitehead's goal, which came at 51:36, was her first as a Tiger.
Senior forward
Tiffany Brown added an insurance tally at the 67:22 mark to take over the team scoring lead with her fourth overall for the season.
Colorado College out-shot the visiting Bears by a 19-11 margin, including a 12-5 edge in the first half when a pair of Lyman headers from in close clanked off the crossbar. Brown also hit the crossbar with a blast from the left side shortly after intermission with the score still tied at 0-0.
