Tigers rally for 1-1 tie with UAB

Late goal by Lyman helps CC avert shutout loss

Refusing to succumb to the frustration of its recent inability to finish, Colorado College reaped a small reward on Sunday.

Sophomore forward Brittney Lyman scored on an acrobatic deflection with 4:25 left in regulation, lifting the Tigers to a 1-1 tie with the University of Alabama-Birmingham in their Conference USA match at Stewart Field.

“We showed a lot of fight today,” head coach Geoff Bennett said after watching his team out-shoot UAB by a 36-15 margin including a 23-8 edge after halftime. “We were four minutes away from losing yet unbelievably disappointed with a tie. We're doing everything we can do, except score. But it'll come. Once it does, once we start clicking, we're going to start seeing some success in the final third.”

Sunday's draw gave CC, which averted being shut out for the third consecutive outing, a 4-2-4 overall record for the season. The visiting Blazers moved to 4-5-1.

Both teams are 0-1-1 in league play.

Lyman's dramatic goal, her fourth of the campaign, came after freshman Lauren DiGregorio headed Tiffany Brown's corner kick toward UAB keeper Kate Blankenship. Camped near the goal line but facing away from the play, Lyman twirled to her right with her leg in the air and got the outside of her foot on the ball enough to tip it past Blankenship.

Until that point, it looked as though Carolyn Polcari's tally at the 26-minute mark would stand up for the Blazers. Polcari also converted on a deflection, heading the ball off the outstretched hand of Tigers keeper Caitlin Hulyo as Hulyo was moving in the opposite direction to stop an attempt by UAB's Morgan Haney.

CC, which dominated in time of possession, also finished with a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Blazers, in fact, didn't get their first until the final half minute of the game.

Blankenship made 11 saves in the contest, including a leaping stop near the crossbar on Lyman's rocket attempt in the fifth minute of the second overtime period. Hulyo, who dove to thwart an attempt by the Blazers' Laura McCalla in the closing minute, finished with nine saves.
