Tigers clinch second place in Conference USA

Box Score Colorado College clinched second place in Conference USA with a 4-1 victory over the University of Tulsa on Senior Day at CC's Stewart Field.

The Tigers completed the home portion of their conference schedule with a 6-0 record and outscored their opponents 10-1. It marks just the second time CC went undefeated at home in C-USA. The 2006 team went 4-0 in its first season as an affiliate member of the conference.

“We obviously love playing here,” head coach Geoff Bennett said. “It's a good environment and the fans are great. I can't say enough about the support we get. There's something about walking out and playing on Stewart Field that our players and staff love.

“But we're not playing here again this year. We've got to get our heads adjusted to the fact we're playing on the road the rest of the year and we'll see how long we can continue playing.”

Lauren DiGregorio opened the scoring in the eighth minutes when she chased down a long clearing pass, cut toward the center of the box and beat a diving Katie Bykowski with a low drive toward the right post from 15 yards.

Colorado College doubled its lead when freshman midfielder Kaeli Vandersluis converted on her first penalty kick after junior forward Brennan O'Connell was taken down from behind while driving toward the right post. It turned out to be the second game-winning goal for Vandersluis this season.

Tulsa had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the 29th minute, but Stephanie Aitken was denied on a pair of shots in a span of just six seconds, the first on a save by junior goalkeeper Hanna Berglund and the second on a block by sophomore defender Sarah Haizlip.

Golden Hurricane sliced its deficit in half a little more than two minutes later when Danielle Hughes scored on a header after Berglund made a save on a hard shot by Clair Nicholson from the left edge of the box. Tulsa became the only conference opponent to score at Stewart Field this season.

The Golden Hurricane applied pressure during the opening minutes of the second half, but the Tigers answered with a pair of goals off set pieces just 5:11 apart.

Senior midfielder Kelsey Wise gave the Tigers a two-goal advantage in the 62nd minute when she found freshman defender Jordan Savold's corner kick near the left post and slid the ball into the net for her second goal of the season.

“I've never scored on that goal and I wanted to before I got out of here,” Wise said. “A one-goal lead is a little scary, so the goal helped us sort of re-group and get ourselves back together, get our confidence back.”

Senior defender Kelly Browne, who still has one season of eligibility remaining, scored her first goal as a Tiger on a header off a Savold corner kick in the 67th minute.

“More important than those two individuals scoring was we finally scored off corners,” Bennett said. “We've had a ton of corners this year and haven't been finishing. Today we scored on two corners at a crucial moment.

“They came out unbelievably hard in the second half and sometimes when you don't the momentum a set piece can help you regain it. After Kelsey scored on the first one, we got the momentum back and it was a nice way to seal the day.”

The two points were the first for Savold, who made her first career start in Sunday's game.

Berglund tied her season high of nine saves, five of which came during the second half when CC was outshot by an 8-4 margin.
Tulsa finished with a 17-15 advantage in total shots and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

Bykowski stopped five shots for the Golden Hurricane, which slipped to 10-6-3 overall and 4-4-2 in the conference.

Colorado College, which improved to 9-6-3 overall and 7-2-1 in C-USA, plays its final game of the regular season on Friday night at UTEP.
