After playing its last five games on the road, in venues with NHL-size ice surfaces, Colorado College returns to the World Arena's Olympic sheet this week for the first time in more than a month.
The No. 5-ranked Tigers, currently eighth in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings but with at least one game in hand with every other WCHA team, take on the University of Wisconsin in a rematch of two opponents that met in the opening round of the league playoffs last March.
CC, which ousted the Badgers from the 2010-11 post-season by winning Games 2 and 3 of their best-of-three playoff series, is 5-2 overall and 3-2 in league play after suffering a 5-4 defeat to the University of Denver at Magness Arena last Saturday.
Wisconsin, which split with top-ranked University of Minnesota at home last week, is 5-6-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the WCHA, three points ahead of Colorado College.
Saturday's series finale marks Scott Owens' 500th as head coach at his alma mater. Currently in his 13th season at the helm, Owens owns a record of 286-171-41 (.615) in 498 outings at the Tigers' helm. That includes a 21-14-6 mark (.585) in 41 previous battles with UW, where the Madison, Wis., native served as an assistant coach during the 1990-91 season.
The teams have met 179 times before. While the Badgers own an all-time advantage of 108-62-9 in a rivalry that dates back to Jan. 8, 1965, they have won just four of the last 17 encounters since the 2006-07 season. CC is 12-4-1 in the series during that span, including its two victories in the playoff series last spring.
The Tigers are 12-10-1 in 23 meetings at the World Arena, including an 11-5-1 mark in the last 17 after dropping five of the first six.
