Day helps Tigers sprint past Metro State

Sophomore Brenna Day recorded season-best times while winning the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly as Colorado College cruised to a 159-44 victory over Metro State College on Saturday afternoon at CC's Schlessman Natatorium.

As a team, the Tigers won 12 of 13 events and lowered the squad's top times in five races.

In her first competition of the meet, Day chopped 1.23 seconds off senior Carrie Markel's top time in the 200 free set on Nov. 13, touching the wall in 2:04.62. Four events later, she shaved .33 off Malia Vitousek's mark in the 100 fly set on Nov. 12 by posting a winning time of 1:06.00.

CC started the day off by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:59.85, which lowered the team's top time in the event by .18 seconds.

Other season-best times were posted by freshman Emily Houghton while winning the 100 backstroke in 1:04.90, and by Abby Sawyer who took first place in the 100 breaststroke with an effort of 1:12.32.  

Junior Nicole Fazio won both diving events, taking the 1-meter competition with a six-dive total of 251.32 points and the three-meter board with 241.42.

CC also received individual victories from Markel in the 50 free (26.55), sophomore Molly Brown in the 400 individual medley (5:15.90), freshman Emma Holmes in the 100 free (57.70) and freshman Katy Martinez in the 1,650 free.

Colorado College wraps up the first half of the season next Friday when the Big Cats play host to Division I Northwestern University and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Austin College at 5 p.m.
