After earning the program's 20th all-time NCAA playoff bid and 12th since 1995, Colorado College has its work cut out right off the bat this week.
The Tigers face perhaps their most daunting challenge of the season on Friday, taking on No 2-ranked and defending national champion Boston College in opening-round play at the West Regional in St. Louis, Mo.
Faceoff for the nationally televised (
ESPNU) contest at Scottrade Center, home of the NHL's St. Louis Blues, is 8:04 p.m. CT.
If 13th-ranked CC can get past the Eagles, who claimed both the regular-season and playoff titles in the Hockey East Association, it will take on the winner of Friday's other regional match-up between the University of Michigan and the University of Nebraska Omaha.
Saturday's victor advances to the NCAA Frozen Four, scheduled for April 7 and 9 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.
BC owns a 10-game undefeated streak (9-0-1) against Colorado College dating back to the 1968-69 season and is 12-4-1 all-time against the Tigers, whose last victory in the rivalry (8-5) occurred on Dec. 27, 1967, on neutral ice in the semifinals of the St. Paul Classic.
Boston College takes a 30-7-1 overall record into Friday's encounter, while CC is 22-18-3.
Eagles goaltender John Muse, who backstopped his team to national titles as a junior last spring and as a freshman in 2008, is undefeated (8-0) in NCAA tournament play during his career. Muse is 27-5-1 between the pipes this season, with a 2.13 goals-against average and .926 saves percentage.
The Tigers, who won NCAA crowns in 1950 and 1957, last advanced beyond regionals in 2005, when they reached the Frozen Four for the third time since 1996.
