Tigers run out of time against DU

Box Score

Sophomore defender Katie Uyenishi found the net early in the second half, but Colorado College was unable to net the equalizer in the closing minutes and the University of Denver held on for a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon.

After falling behind 2-0 with a little less than five minutes remaining in the first half, the Tigers seized control and didn't let up until the final horn.

“I'm super proud of the way our team rebounded,” head coach Geoff Bennett said. “This was the CC team we expected to see. We just couldn't finish.”

Uyenishi put CC on the board when she scored off a corner kick by freshman Kaeli Vandersluis in the 52nd minute.

Colorado College launched 12 of its 18 shots during the final 45 minutes and had the last of its eight corner kicks with less than 10 seconds to play.

DU's Maria Khan made five of her seven saves during the second half, including four during a seven-minute stretch that was played almost exclusively in the Pioneers' zone.

Kalie Vaughn and Stephanie Woo scored for Denver, which improved to 2-0 in the Colorado Cup.

Hanna Berglund finished with one save for the Tigers.

“We're disappointed we didn't pull out the win, but we played very well,” Bennett said. “We're excited about playing at home next weekend.”

Colorado College plays host to Utah State University and Jacksonville University next Friday and Sunday, respectively.
