Tigers set to tangle with Cornell

Big Red makes inaugural visit to World Arena

Despite competing outside the WCHA again this week, No. 6-ranked Colorado College stands much to gain or lose.

The Tigers, currently third in the league standings with a 9-5 record in conference play, attempt to improve on their position in the computerized Pairwise rankings and overall mark of 12-6 when they take on ECAC-leading Cornell University in a two-game series at the World Arena.

Faceoff times are 7:37 p.m. Friday and 7:07 p.m. Saturday as the 13th-ranked Big Red visits the CSWA for the first time ever.

The pair of match-ups concludes the non-conference portion of CC's regular-season schedule.

Cornell, 6-1-1 in league play, is 8-4-1 overall after losing to Massachusetts (5-2) and defeating Clarkson (5-3) at the Florida College Hockey Classic last week.

While the teams have met five times previously in single-game tournament appearances, they've never played each other in a two-game series before.

The Big Red owns a 3-2 edge in the rivalry, and is making just its second trip ever to Colorado Springs. The first occurred more than 31 years ago, when the visitors from Ithaca, N.Y., claimed a 7-3 victory in a holiday tourney at the old Broadmoor World Arena on Dec. 29, 1980.

This week's series pits the country's third most productive offense (Colorado College, at 3.89 goals per game) against the third stingiest defense (Cornell, at 2.00 allowed per outing).

Sophomore netminder Andy Iles, who has started and finished every game between the pipes for the Big Red so far in 2011-12, is tied for second nationally with five shutouts and ranks fifth with a 1.91 goals-against average.
