Tigers close out home schedule

Weekly Release No. 9

Six members of the Colorado College women's soccer program will play their final home games when No. 16 UCF and Southern Miss visit Stewart field on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

The Tigers celebrate Senior Day against the Golden Eagles on Sunday, when forward Kim Babcock (Millis, MA), goalkeeper Hanna Berglund (Golden, CO), defender Kelly Browne (Colorado Springs, CO), forward Brittney Lyman (Arvada, CO), midfielder Hannah Peterson (Denver, CO) and midfielder Marika Viragh (Columbus, OH) will be honored in a post-game ceremony.

CC enters Friday's contest against the Knights with an 8-3-4 overall record. The Tigers are currently fifth in Conference USA with 10 points and a 3-2-1 record after dropping a 2-1 overtime decision against the University of Memphis and defeating UAB, 1-0, last week. They are 5-1-2 at Stewart Field, where they have outscored the opposition 17-5.

UCF, 10-3-1 overall, is fourth in the C-USA standings with 12 points after defeating the University of Tulsa (2-0) and falling to SMU (2-1) at home last week. The Knights are 3-1-1 on the road this season.

Southern Miss takes a 4-7-1 overall record into Friday night's game at UTEP. The Golden Eagles, who are tied for 10th in the standings with three points and a 1-4-0 league record, own a 1-5-1 record on the road in 2012.

The series between Colorado College and UCF is tied at 3-3-2 after last year's 1-1 tie in Orlando. The Knights are 3-1-0 in games played at Stewart Field despite dropping a 1-0 decision on their last visit in 2010. Likewise, the Tigers are 2-0-2 in Orlando. CC has won all five previous encounters with Southern Miss, including both games in Colorado Springs. In fact, the Tigers have outscored USM 15-0 after last year's 3-0 victory in Hattiesburg.

Colorado College is fifth among C-USA teams in scoring offense, at 1.80 goals per game, and second with a 0.81 goals-against average. Sophomore Jessie Ayers (Seattle, WA), the reigning C-USA Midfielder of the Year, leads the Tigers with career highs of six goals and 15 points Junior midfielder Madison Whitehead (Highland Village, TX) is second with 11 points (5g/1a), while Lyman is next with 10 points (2g/6a).

Freshman keeper Kate Scheele (Seattle, WA) has started 11 of 15 games, posting a 4-2-4 record with four shutouts. She owns a 0.99 GAA and a .814 saves percentage. Berglund has a 4-1-0 record, and currently has career bests with a 0.46 GAA and .857 saves ratio. The Colorado College defense has recorded seven shutouts, which is tied for second in the league.

CC has scored 17 of its 27 goals during the second half of games this season. In fact, the Tigers scored the game-winning goal against Tulsa in the 61st minute, versus Denver in the 62nd minute, against Marshall in the 80th minute and versus UAB in the 81st minute.

Colorado College struck twice during the final 45 minutes during the 2-1 victory over Colgate, the 2-1 victory at Marshall and the 2-2 tie at SMU. Ten different Tigers – led by Ayers with five goals – have found the net in the second half of a game this season.

With her assist on Long's game winner against UAB on Sunday, Lyman climbed into a tie with Karen Willoughby (1985-88) for 11th place on the program's all-time points list and is just one away from joining Tara Nott (1990-93) in the top 10.

Thanks to a career-high six assists so far this season, Lyman became the 28th player in school history to reach double figures in that category and is now tied for 21st on the all-time chart with 11. She also is tied for ninth with nine career goals.

The Tigers close out the regular season with three consecutive road games, beginning with a night contest at the University of Houston on Friday, Oct., 19, and an afternoon encounter at Rice University on Sunday, Oct. 21.
