Seniors lead Tigers to sweep

Senior duo Kate Squires and Laura Goldsmith led the Colorado College volleyball team to a pair of wins on Saturday as the twosome was honored for playing their final season in Reid Arena.
 
The Tigers began the day beating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, 25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 25-16, and came back the very next match to sweep Baker University, 25-12, 25-22, 25-16.
 
Squires orchestrated the CC attack with a combined 85 assists, which included a career-high 43 assists against CMS.
 
Goldsmith led the offense and defense with a combined 33 kills and 44 digs. The senior also earned a career-high 19 kills against the Athenas to aid the Tiger attack.
 
During the first match of the day, CC was solid defensively holding CMS to a meager .056 hitting percentage with 39 kills and 29 errors in 177 attempts. The Tigers picked up nine blocks and 22 more digs than the Athenas to earn the win.
 
Sophomore Kristen Liberty led CC at the net with a career-high seven blocks, while picking up six kills in the middle. Freshmen Courtney Birkett and Sophie Merrifield added 22 digs and 18 digs, respectively to aid the back row.
 
During the final match of the day, the Tigers were steady offensively hitting a .262 attack percentage on 47 kills in 122 attempts with only 15 errors. CC also held Baker to a .109 hitting percentage with seven team blocks to earn the sweep.
 
Freshman Emily Phillips and Birkett added 10 kills apiece to help the Tiger attack against the Wildcats, while Merriefield and freshman Karina Guerrero added 20 digs and 10 digs, respectively in the back row.
 
The 20th-rank Tigers improved to 17-6 on the season with the pair of wins. CMS dropped to 12-8, while Baker dropped to 15-10 on the season.
 
Colorado College wraps up play at home as it hosts Whittier College in an early 10 a.m. match on Saturday.
