Having recently presented Scott Owens with his 300th and 301st victories as head coach, Colorado College shoots to remain undefeated with another pair of non-conference outings against two diifferent opponents this week.
The Tigers, who have crept into the national rankings at No. 19 in the
U.S. College Hockey Online poll released on Monday, meet Air Force at the Cadet Ice Arena on Friday in their first road game of the season, then return home to tangle with the University of Massachusetts Lowell at the World Arena on Saturday.
Faceoff is 7 p.m. (MT) at AFA and 7:07 p.m. for the weekend finale against the No. 9-ranked (
USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine) RiverHawks, who are coached by former CC assistant (2000-08) Norm Bazin.
Air Force competes in the Atlantic Hockey Association while UML is a member of Hockey East.
Colorado College, which doesn't begin its WCHA schedule until the first weekend of November, is 2-0 overall after skating to a pair of 5-4 home-ice victories over Clarkson University last Friday and Saturday.
Air Force is 0-0-2 after opening its season with a pair of ties at the Kendall Classic in Anchorage, Alaska. The Falcons scored with three seconds remaining in regulation to forge a 3-3 deadlock with the host Seawolves in Saturday's tournament finale. A night earlier, they finished overtime knotted at 2-2 with the University of Alaska Fairbanks. UMass Lowell, which visits the University of Denver on Friday, also tied its only game so far – a 1-1 Hockey East result against the University of Vermont on Friday, Oct. 12.
Friday marks the 69th all-time showdown between CC and Air Force in a rivalry that began in early December of 1969. Despite a 2-1 loss at the World Arena last Dec. 30, the Tigers still own a 58-8-2 all-time advantage. That includes a 29-5-1 edge at the academy, where they prevailed by a 6-4 count in their most recent visit two seasons ago and are 21-1-1 against AFA since the late 1970s.
Colorado College is 7-3 in 10 previous encounters with UMass Lowell, including a 5-3 NCAA tournament victory in 1996 that clinched a trip to the Frozen Four in Cincinnat, Ohio. The teams last met in October 2002, when they split a season-opening series at the CSWA.
