"Mister OT” strikes again!
Alexander Krushelnyski, whose uncanny knack for scoring big goals in televised games served Colorado College so well his first two seasons, obviously isn't ready to slack off as a junior.
Krushelnyski buried his third tally of the season just 25 seconds into overtime Friday, lifting the Tigers to a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the University of Wisconsin in their 2012-13 WCHA opener at Madison's Kohl Center.
The lanky left winger from Bloomfield Hills, Mich., took a pass from sophomore linemate
Charlie Taft from behind the UW net and beat Badgers goalie Joel Rumpel with a one-timer to end the see-saw contest that saw the visitors finish with a 39-26 advantage in shots on goal.
The second overtime game winner of Krushelnyski's career – he also scored on a penalty shot to beat the University of Denver last season at the World Arena – snapped a three-game losing for CC, which improved to 4-3 for the young campaign in front of a regional TV audience on
Altitude 2 and
Fox Sports Wisconsin.
Junior defenseman
Eamonn McDermott collected three assists in the triumph.
Wisconsin jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Michael Mersch and Brad Navin after a pre-game ceremony honoring legendary coach Bob Johnson, who also spent three season at the Colorado College helm in the mid-1960s before moving to Madison.
But the Tigers roared back in the second frame on red lighters just 1:47 apart by freshman winger
Hunter Fejes and senior defenseman
Mike Boivin, with McDermott factoring in on both.
Boivin's tying goal came on a power play, ending an 0-for-13 slump with the man advantage for CC?that dated back to a 6-2 victory at Air Force on Oct. 19. Senior team captain
William Rapuzzi added another power-play goal that put Colorado College ahead, 4-3, at 10:54 of the third period after
Scott Winkler evened things up for the second time earlier in the stanza. Krushelnyski set that one up to join McDermott with a multiple-point performance.
Junior netminder
Josh Thorimbert, who backstopped the win with 22 saves, picked up his third assist of the season with a helper on Rapuzzi's goal.
Wisconsin, which won and tied at Minnesota Duluth last week, dropped to 1-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league play.
The teams meet in a rematch at 7:07 p.m. CT Saturday.
