Tigers fall to Yale in overtime, 6-5

Playing with a lead for the first time in five games, Colorado College couldn't quite close things out in regulation on Saturday. Then the hammer fell in overtime.

Senior winger Josh Balsh whisked a rising wrist shot just inside the far post from a tough angle deep in the left faceoff circle with 1:39 remaining in the extra session, lifting Yale University to a 6-5 sudden-death victory at the World Arena that extended CC's winless streak to four games.

The Tigers, who fought back from a four-goal deficit to earn a 4-4 tie with the University of New Hampshire 24 hours earlier, found themselves up 4-3 and 5-4 in this one despite being out-shot by a large margin for the second consecutive night.

Balsh's game winner, his first red lighter of the season, came on Yale's 48th shot on target as the Bulldogs repeatedly tested senior goaltender Joe Howe.

Colorado College, which launched 34 attempts on two Yale netminders, could not solve senior Nick Maricic after he entered the game in relief of starter Jeff Malcolm following CC's fifth goal at 13:37 of the second period. Once freshman winger Jared Hanson snapped a 4-4 tie with the first tally of his collegiate career, knocking home a rebound from under the catching glove of Malcolm, the Tigers managed only nine attempts on Maricic the rest of the way.

Rylan Schwartz, Eamonn McDermott, Archie Skalbeck and Scott Winkler also scored in the loss, with Winkler adding an assist.

Senior right winger Antoine Laganiere, who staked the visitors to a 1-0 lead just 57 seconds into the game, picked up his second assist of the night on Andrew Miller's power-play goal that pulled Yale even at 5-5 with 7:57 left in the third frame. The Bulldogs also got goals from Jesse Root, Tommy Fallen and Trent Ruffolo while improving to 5-2-1 for the season.

CC, which resumes league play in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association next week with a two-game series at home against the University of North Dakota, dropped to 7-6-1.
