UMD completes sweep of Tigers, 5-2

Colorado College suffers fourth consecutive loss on the road

The late-season traveling blues continued to plague Colorado College on Saturday.

Struggling CC dropped its fourth consecutive decision on the road, falling 5-2 to the University of Minnesota Duluth in the finale of their two-game series at AMSOIL Arena along the southwest shores of Lake Superior.

Despite being swept for the second consecutive time away from home and suffering their fifth loss in their last six games overall, the Tigers remain tied with the Universiy of Nebraska Omaha for fifth place in the WCHA standings. Now 16-14-2 for the season and 13-12-1 in conference play, they still can clinch home ice for the opening round of the league playoffs by beating Michigan Tech at least once at home next week.

A power-play goal by junior center Rylan Schwartz, his 22nd tally of the campaign, pulled CC even with 90 seconds remaing in the first period of Saturday's contest after the first of two red lighters by Mike Seidel staked the defending national champion Bulldogs to a 1-0 lead at 9:40.

But No. 4-ranked UMD, which leads the nation in scoring offense, struck twice in less than two minutes midway through the middle frame to take command. Seidel made it 2-1 on a power play at 7:59 before J.T. Brown, who ended Friday's contest in overtime, notched what proved to be his second game winner in two nights at 9:46.

Caleb Herbert and Travis Oleksuk added more damage in the third period before junior right wing Andrew Hamburg got Colorado College on the board again with 25 seconds left to play. Freshman defenseman Aaron Harstad picked up an assist on both Tiger goals.

Minnesota Duluth, which improved to 22-7-5 overall and 16-6-4 in league play, remained two points behind first-place University of Minnesota heading into the final weekend of regular-season action.

The Bulldogs, who got three assists from WCHA scoring leader Jack Connolly as well as two apiece from senior defenseman Brady Lamb and senior goalie Kenny Reiter, out-shot CC by a 37-27 margin. Reiter, who has five assists for the season, finished with 25 saves while junior Joe Howe made 35 for the Tigers.
