As expected,
Jaden Schwartz has completed his career at Colorado College.
The sophomore left wing, who earned All-WCHA honors as a freshman (third team) in 2010-11 and again this season (second team) while leading the Tigers in scoring both years, agreed to terms on Monday with the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League.
The Blues announced on Friday that he will make his professional and NHL debut at Tampa Bay at 5 p.m. Mountain on Saturday, March 17. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Midwest and on the SUN Network.
St. Louis selected him 14th overall in the first round of the NHL entry draft two summers ago, before he ever played a game for CC. In two seasons and just 60 games, he amassed 88 points with 32 goals and 56 assists.
“It's been a dream of mine to play in the NHL and I'm excited to be able to do it as a St. Louis Blue,” said Schwartz in a press release. “The Blues are having a terrific season and I will do whatever they need me to do just to help out.”
Schwartz, who finished with 41 points (15g, 26a) in 30 appearances this season, will join his new team in Chicago on Monday night and will be available for Tuesday's game against the Blackhawks. It looks very likely that he will suit up for St. Louis soon.
“He's going to spend the rest of the year with us,” Blues general manager Doug Armstrong told STLToday.com. “The way the rule is written, if he signs an NHL deal this year, he can't go to the minors. So he's signing to be available for our roster for the rest of the season.
“After talking to our scouting staff and in particular Dave Taylor, who has seen him play two of the last three weekends, and in looking at our roster ... and injuries now, we thought it was worth getting him under contract to play for our team this year.”
Schwartz finished this season with a 41 points (15g,26a), one more than his brother, junior center Rylan, who led the Tigers with 23 goals.
"We are happy for Jaden and the Schwartz family," said CC head coach Scott Owens. "This is a special day for them, a dream realized. He gave us two very good years and we are proud of his accomplishments and wish him the best. It'll be fun to watch his progress and continued development as he begins his NHL career. We are pleased that he's getting an opportunity with the Blues right from the outset and hope they play deep into the playoffs."
