NHL connection continues for Tigers

Two committed recruits join long list of drafted players

It looks as though Colorado College will continue to supply players to the National Hockey League for the foreseeable future.

As expected, two more Tigers-to-be joined the ranks of NHL draft choices on Saturday when the names of Jaccob Slavin and Hunter Fejes were called at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh.

The Carolina Hurricanes picked Slavin, a 6-2, 170-pound defenseman who has committed to enroll at CC as a freshman for the 2013-14 season, in the fourth round. The Phoenix Coyotes grabbed Fejes, a 6-1, 192-pound forward who will begin his collegiate career this fall, in the sixth.

"There will be a lot of opportunities there (with the Hurricans) for sure,” said Slavin, who will remain with the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League for the 2012-13 campaign. “I am a Carolina fan for sure now.”

The native of Erie, Colo., will serve as an assistant captain with the USHL's Steel for the second consecutive year. He had been a lifelong fan of the Buffalo Sabres. An alumnus of the Denver-area Colorado Thunderbirds club program, he recorded 30 points (3g,27a) in 60 games and a plus-6 rating for Chicago in 2011-12.

Fejes, who hails from Anchorage, Alaska, spent his high-school years in Minnesota. As a senior in '11-12, he led Shattuck-St. Mary's with 38 goals and finished second with 78 points in 55 appearances.

"I could get used to that weather,” he said of Phoenix, where his family maintains a vacation home. "“I got really excited [about learning that he'd been drafted by the Coyotes) and then I started trying to figure out what to do.”

Actually, he'll be heading from Anchorage to development camp in Glendale, Ariz. on Monday. There the Coyotes can look him over again and make their recommendations on improving his game while he plays for CC.

He'll be one of four NHL draftees on the Colorado College roster in 2012-13, along with senior forward Scott Winkler (Dallas 2009) and sophomore defensemen Peter Stoykewych (Winnipeg 2010) and Aaron Harstad (Winnipeg 2011). All-America left winger Jaden Schwartz, who signed an NHL contract with St. Louis at the conclusion of the 2012-13 season after playing two years with the Tigers, was a first-round choice of the Blues in 2010.

Fejes helped Shattuck, a perennial powerhouse in the USA Hockey Tier I Under-18 ranks, claim national championships the last two seasons. The Sabres posted an overall record of 50-5-2 in 2011-12, when he led the team with 38 goals and finished second with 78 points in 55 appearances.

Slavin was the 120th overall pick in the draft while Fejes was the 178th.
