No. 14-ranked Colorado College kicked off its 2012 season on Friday with a split at the Pacific Coast Classic Tournament, bouncing back for a tough five-set victory over the University of LaVerne after opening with a disappointing loss to No. 6-ranked California Lutheran University.
The Tigers, who fell to Cal Lutheran in three games (25-15, 25-12, 25-10) early in the day, rallied from the wakeup call to defeat LaVerne, 27-25, 20-25, 22-25, 26-24, 15-12, in Claremont, Calif.
Seniors
Kate Squires and
Laura Goldsmith paved the way for CC against the Panthers. Squires fueled the attack, with 11 kills and dishing out a personal-record 21 assists. Goldsmith led the defense with 32 digs.
Freshman setter
Courtney Birkett orchestrated the offense in the triumph, with 33 assists. Birkett also contributed 15 digs and 11 kills for her first career triple-double.
Squires also earned her first-career triple-double as she picked up 10 digs on defense.
Freshmen
Karina Guerrero and
Lauren Hahn added 15 and 10 digs, respectively, with Hahn hammering down 10 kills to aid the attack.
The Tigers are return to action on Saturday at the campus of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in the second day of the season-opening tournament. CC will play Whittier College at 11 a.m. PT and wraps up the weekend against tourney co-host Pomona-Pitzer at 3:30 p.m. PT.
