No. 14-ranked Colorado College improved to 3-1 for the season on Saturday with a pair of victories to close out the Pacific Coast Classic Volleyball Tournament in Claremont, Calif.
The Tigers opened the day's action with an early 26-24, 26-24, 25-17 sweep of Whittier College, then rallied for a 21-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-21 triumph over tourney co-host Pomina-Pitzer Colleges in their nightcap later in the afternoon.
Senior
Kate Squires led CC during the morning match with a team-high 23 assists and added 14 digs and six blocks on defense.
Freshman outside hitter
Lauren Hahn sparked the Tiger attack against the Poets with 11 kills, while sophomore middle blocker
Randi Braak added seven. Braak also came up big at the net, recording four blocks.
Colorado College spread out its offense against the Sagehens as freshman duo
Courtney Birkett and
Emily Phillips each tallied a team-high 15 kills in the tournament finale. Birkett and Squires, who added nine more kills, dished out 30 and 24 assists, respecitively, while organizing the offense for CC.
On the defensive side, Birkett tallied 15 digs to earn her second triple-double of the weekend. Senior libero
Laura Goldsmith led the team with 25 digs, while freshman
Karina Guerrero and Squires each contributed 19 and 15 digs, respectively.
Braak paced the Tigers at the net with four blocks.
The Tigers kick off their home schedule next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8, playing host to four visiting teams in the 2012 Colorado College Classic at newly renovated Reid Arena.
