Austin holds off Tiger sweep

Box Score Colorado College let its seven-point lead in the first half slip away as Austin College beat the Tigers, 61-49 to avoid the sweep, Sunday afternoon in Sherman, Texas.
 
CC beat Austin two previous times earlier in the season in Reid Arena, but were unable to complete the sweep despite committing a season-low 16 turnovers.
 
The Kangaroos struck first when Christina Kime hit a three-pointer to give Austin its first lead 11 seconds into the game.
 
The Tigers came back when freshman Danielle Davis drained a layup to ignite an 18-8 run that was completed by a layup from freshman Katie Wirth with 11:17 left in the half to give CC its largest lead.
 
Austin (9-10, 3-6 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) rallied back and retook its lead on a 10-2 run when Erin Riley hit a jumper with 7:50 remaining in the first half to give her team a 21-20 edge. The Kangaroos held onto its lead and went into halftime with a 28-26 advantage.
 
The Tigers suffered from cold shooting in the second half making only 8-of-27 shots for a 29.6 field-goal percentage and also gave Austin 21 extra attempts from the charity stripe.
 
CC (3-15, 3-5 SCAC) was led by senior Marissa Gradoz with 15 points and eight rebounds. Senior Sarah Gunkel and sophomore Courtney Tyus also scored in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
 
Riley came off the bench to lead Austin with a game-best 17 points, while Kime added 13 points to aid the offense. Shayna Clardy scored 11 points and Brittany Stepanski added another 10 points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds for a double-double.
 
Colorado College returns home for the first time after the New Year as it hosts Southwestern University and Trinity University on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
