Colorado College appears to have a little firepower heading into the 2013-14 regular season.
The Tigers erupted for five goals in the second period on Saturday, including a pair off the stick of sophomore center
Cody Bradley, and coasted to a 8-4 victory over the United States Under-18 Team in their second and final exhibition outing at the World Arena.
They start playing for keeps next week, hosting the University of Minnesota Duluth in the first-ever National Collegiate Hockey Conference series for both squads.
The visiting Under-18 Team made a game of Saturday's meeting for a little more than 20 minutes.
"We had seven different guys score goals tonight," said
head coach Scott Owens, who also saw seven more of his players record at least one assist. "That's good. It helps their confidence."
Shane Gersich, who has committed to play at the University of North Dakota in 2014-15, tapped in a power-play goal in the opening period for the Under-18s. But CC sandwiched a pair of its own around his red lighter to lead 2-1 at the first intermission. Sophomore
Hunter Fejes staked the Tigers to a 1-0 lead with a quick wrister from the slot just 3:38 into the contest, and after Gersich's tally at 7:22, junior defenseman
Ian Young fired from the point through traffic to Colorado College ahead to stay at 12:51.Â
Once junior wingers
Charlie Taft and
Scott Wamsganz struck within a span of 5:29 early in the middle frame, CC was in complete control. Freshman goalie
Tyler Marble, who started, gave way to junior
Courtney Lockwood 5:30 into the stanza before Wamsganz made it 4-1 at 7:09.
Future Boston College hopeful Alex Tuch rapped his own rebound past Lockwood at 9:05 but junior blue-line specialist
Aaron Harstad and Bradley responded 2:18 apart to put the Tigers up 6-2. Bradley's second goal with 3:18 left in the frame upped the count to 7-2 entering the third.
Marble finished with 13 saves. Lockwood made three. Senior
Josh Thorimbert played the third period and steered aside nine of the 11 shots he faced. Freshman defensemen
Gustav Olofsson and
Jaccob Slavin each collected a pair of assists for Colorado College. Tuch set up a third-period goal by Ryan Wagner to complete a two-point performance for the visitors.
