Ayers strikes in overtime as CC edges Rice

Box Score Junior midfielder Jessie Ayers scored four minutes into overtime to give Colorado College a 4-3 victory at Rice University in a battle of last year's Conference USA co-champions.

With their ninth consecutive victory, the Tigers improved to 11-3-0 overall and 6-0-0 in Conference USA.

Ayers' first 'Golden Goal' also was her league-leading fifth game winner of the season and the eighth of her career.  

Senior defender Katie Uyenishi tied the game in the 71st minute with her second goal of the year. Senior midfielder Madison Whitehead assisted on both goals.

Quinny Truong gave the Owls an early lead, but Ayers tied the score in the 25th minute off a feed from junior defender Kaeli Vandersluis, who extended her career-best point streak to nine games.

The Tigers took their first lead in the 39th minute on an own goal, but Rice got an equalizer early in the second half on a goal by Lauren Hughes.

Rice took its second lead at 3-2 lead nearly six minutes later on a goal by Jasmine Isokpunwu who scored from 10 yards out..

Sophomore Kate Scheele made four saves for the Tigers.

Kara Dugall stopped six shots during the final 19:27. Starter Amy Czyz made four saves for the Owls, who slipped to 5-6-2 and 3-3-0 in league play.

Colorado College visits the University of Texas at San Antonio on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
