Hendrix, Ayers power Tigers past USM

Box Score Freshman forward Chanisse Hendrix and junior midfielder Jessie Ayers made sure the Colorado College seniors won their final game at Stewart Field.

Hendrix struck for a goal and added three assists, while Ayers recorded two goals and an assist, to lead the Tigers to a 5-1 victory over Southern Miss in the regular-season finale for both teams on Thursday afternoon.

Playing a home game on Halloween for the first time since 2003, CC got a scare when the Golden Eagles took the lead in the second minute with their first-ever goal in seven games against the Tigers. Freshman midfielder Somer Jones put a shot into the upper right corner from 20 yards out after settling a pass from Kimberly Belmont, but the momentum did not last very long.

A little more than seven minutes later, junior defender Casey Adkins received a red card for taking down Jaclyn Silsby from behind, and Hendrix went to work shortly thereafter.

She knotted the score in the 16th minute, taking a pass from Ayers near the left edge of the box and ripping a shot inside the far post.

Sarah Schweiss put Colorado College ahead a little more than six minutes later when she knocked in a shot from five yards away after the defense collapsed on Hendrix, who slipped a pass to the sophomore midfielder for her first game winner of the season.

The Tigers doubled their lead in the 29th minute when Ayers re-directed a Hendrix cross from the right sideline into an open net.

Senior midfielder Madison Whitehead notched her first goal of the season 6:33 into the second half, placing a direct kick from 27 yards out on the left side into the top right corner.

Ayers completed her second two-goal game of the season in the 65th minute, putting a shot in the upper right corner from the center of the box. Whitehead started the play with a cross from the right sideline to Hendrix, who turned and touched the ball to Ayers.

With her 10th tally of the season, Ayers climbed into a tie for ninth on CC's all-time scoring list. She also moved into a tie for 17th with 48 career points. Ayers became the first Tiger to record double-digit goals since Emily Beans scored 13 in 2006.

Colorado College finished with a 29-4 advantage in total shots. CC put 18 shots on target, compared to only one for USM.

Sophomore Kate Scheele played the first half, while senior Cody Kornack was in goal for the final 45 minutes.

The Tigers improved to 13-4-1 overall and 8-1-1 in C-USA. CC finished its home schedule with a 9-0-0 record and outscored its opponents 25-3.

Freshman Brittany Taylor made 13 saves for Southern Miss, which finished the season 7-9-4 overall and 1-7-2 in league play.

Taylor's best save occurred with 5:30 remaining when she robbed senior defender Yumi Nguyen by tipping her header over the crossbar.

Colorado College kicks off the postseason on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the 2013 Conference USA Championship at Rice University in Houston.
