Box Score 2 On Saturday, for the first time this season, Colorado College dropped the first set of a match.
It only seemed to serve as an early wakeup call for the Tigers, who proceeded to win six straight and claim their third home-court tournament title in as many tries so far in 2013.
While they roared to the Spike It Up Classic crown with 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-23) victory over Nebraska Wesleyan Universiy in Saturday's championship contest, it was a 25-22 setback to Hamline University to usher in their day's work that got the home team's attention.
Led by freshman outside hitter
Abbe Holtze, who recorded another double-double with 13 kills and a dozen digs, CC bounced back to whip the Pipers 25-13, 25-17, 25-15 in the next three and set the stage for its second showdown in two nights with Nebraska Wesleyan.
The Prairie Wolves, who arrived in town with only two losses, put up another good fight behind the hitting of Malory Dahl (12), Alyssa Stanek (9) and Bridget Butcher (7), who combined for 28 kills and a .268 attack percentage.
But a pair of Colorado College's super sophomores,
Courtney Birkett and
Lauren Hahn, rose to the occasion as difference makers, and the Tigers find themselves sitting at a sparkling 22-1 overall for the season.
Birkett hammered down a match high 16 kills, adding 11 digs, while Hahn chipped in with 10.
Setter
Devon Lucero, who dished out 41 assists, had 13 digs and a hand in three blocked shots as CC won the battle at the net by a 7-4 margin. Junior team captain
Kristen Liberty picked up four block assists. Sophomore
Sophie Merrifield led both teams with 29 digs.
