Box Score The University of New Hampshire erupted for four goals in a span of 2:41 midway through the third period on Friday as the Wildcats rallied from behind for a 6-2 victory over Colorado College in non-conference action at the World Arena.
Â
The teams meet in a rematch at 7:07 p.m. MT Saturday.
Â
The Tigers struck for a pair of tallies by
Archie Skalbeck and
Sam Rothstein just 91 seconds apart in the second frame, grabbing a 2-1 lead, but dropped to 1-9-2 overall for the season as No. 20-ranked UNH seized control in the final 20 minutes of play.
Â
New Hampshire was up 1-0, thanks to the first of two red lighters by Nick Sorkin less than six minutes into the contest, when senior center Skalbeck slipped behind the defense to take a pass from junior defenseman
Ian Young during CC's only power play of the night and tied the game at 6:29 of the middle period.
Â
Rothstein, a freshman center who now leads the team with five points including four assists, knocked in his own rebound at the 8-minute mark to put Colorado College up and bring the crowd of 5,961 to its feet.
Â
"We had a good second period," Scott Owens, CC's head coach, said of the two quick goals. "We had a good 10 minutes of the first. We did some things better offensively tonight. But then, defensively, they (the Wildcats) put a ton of pressure on us, we made mistakes and they converted.
Â
"I'm very disappointed because we're back here at home, we're in a position to go up in a game, but we don't have the ability right now to make a key play or make a key stop at the time to win a game."
Â
UNH pulled even with 2:05 left in the second stanza when Trevor van Riemsdyk's shot from the point was blocked in front but ended up right on the stick of sophomore center Kyle Smith in the slot. Smith whipped the puck past senior goalie
Josh Thorimbert, and the teams went to their respective locker rooms knotted at 2-2.
Â
"It's a 2-2 game in our building," said Owens. "We come out with a chance to make a couple plays early and set the tone, and it doesn't get done. Then they got on a roll. They're deep at forward, they got on a roll and we didn't make enough stops."
Â
Junior center Grayson Downing put New Hampshire, which improved to 8-7-1, ahead to stay at 7:05 of the third period when he one-timed Dalton Speelman's feed from behind the net past Thorimbert. Sorkin, Jeff Silengo and Speelman added goals at 7:47, 8:45 and 9:46 to complete the scoring.
