Box Score Junior goalie Casey DeSmith turned away all 32 shots he faced on Saturday, backstopping the University of New Hampshire to a 3-0 victory over Colorado College in the finale of their two-game non-conference series at the World Arena.
Â
Senior forwards Nick Sorkin and Kevin Goumas recorded three points apiece as the No. 20-ranked Wildcats, who won Friday's opener by a 6-2 count, completed the weekend sweep despite a stellar 32-save performance by CC netminder
Josh Thorimbert.Â
Â
Sorkin, who assisted on a pair of late goals by linemate Goumas that clinched the triumph, snapped a scoreless tie at 12:28 of the second period with what proved to be the game winner.
Â
"It's a 1-0 game with two minutes to go, and we're working hard," said Tigers head coach Scott Owens. "I thought we had a pretty good team game tonight. We just didn't have any production. Josh obviously gave us a chance to tie or win the game."
Â
With the loss, Colorado College dropped to 1-10-2 overall for the season.
Â
While the Tigers out-shot UNH by a 13-9 margin in the opening period, it was Thorimbert who came up with the two biggest saves just five seconds apart late in the frame.
Â
He robbed Matt Willows point-blank from a scramble in front with 3:45 remaining, then made a highlight-reel glove save on Dalton Speelman from the slot right after the ensuing faceoff.
Â
CC's best chance came with 1:32 left when freshman
Matt Hansen let fly with a quick wrist shot from between the circles that rang off the right-side goalpost behind DeSmith.
Â
Thorimbert remained sharp during New Hampshire's first power play of the second period, then made another beautiful glove save on Casey Thrush moments after the Tigers returned to full strength.
Â
The Wildcats finally cracked his armor at 12:28, during another power play, when Sorkin pounced on a rebound and slammed it home from the right faceoff circle after Thorimbert made a save on Goumas.
Â
Colorado College, which was last shut out at home on Jan. 29, 2011, by the University of North Dakota, was awarded a couple power plays of its own early in the third period but never really tested DeSmith.
Â
"It's a similar situation," Owens said, citing a number of previous games this season. "We've had a couple power-play chances late in the game or in the third period, but their aggressive kill gave us fits and we weren't able to get it set up."
Â
The score remained 1-0 until Goumas notched the first of his two tallies at 17:26 of the final stanza. He scored again into an empty net with 41 ticks left on the clock and Thorimbert on the bench in favor of a sixth attacker.
Â
CC returns to National Collegiate Hockey Conference play next week when league-leading University of Nebraska Omaha visits the World Arena for a pair of games.
