Sophie Merrifield recorded 28 digs and
Abbe Holtze put down 19 kills to lead Colorado College to a 25-17, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21 triumph over the University of Dallas in the quarterfinal round on Friday afternoon.
Merrifield set the program's single-season digs record in the second set and finished the match with 645, which is 20 more than the previous mark of 625 set by Hannah Varnell in 2011.
The sophomore libero from Fairfax, Calif., also became the 12th player in program history to record 1,000 or more career digs with her 21st dig.
Meanwhile, Holtze recorded her 13th double-double of the season with a match-high 19 kills and 16 digs.
CC also received clutch performances from sophomore hitters Birkett and
Lauren Hahn. Birkett hit .375 and put away 14 kills, while Hahn finished with 12 kills and hit .300.
Trailing two sets to one, the Crusaders sprinted to a 9-4 lead in the fourth frame. The Tigers answered with an 11-5 run to take a 15-14 lead on a kill by Holtze.
UD tied the score three more times before Colorado College scored three consecutive points to create some separation at 20-17.
After the Crusaders fought back to within 23-21, Holtze closed out the match with a kill and a service ace.
CC will face Texas Lutheran University in the third-place game on Saturday at 4 p.m. CT.
