Thanks to another big day for senior
Brenna Day and three sophomore teammates, Colorado College put up a valiant battle in Golden, Colo., on Saturday.
Day continued her early-season dominance in the sprints, winning both the 50- (25.69) and 100-yard (57.09) freestyle events in addition to finishing a close second in the 200-yard free (2:06.55), as the Lady Cats gave NCAA Division II host Colorado School of Mines a good scare before succumbing by a 179-109 margin.
"This was a hard fought meet, event by event – more so than what the score shows," said head coach
Anne Goodman James. "We lost a key person to illness at the last minute and had to do some lineup adjustments on the fly. I was really proud of the way everyone stepped up."
The dependable Day, whose time in the 200 free was less than four tenths of a second off the winning pace, had plenty of help from her second-year teammates as
Megan Gillespie and
Olivia Dilorati came from behind to post a pair of dramatic victories for CC.
Gillespie turned on the heat to prevail in the 200-yard butterfly (2:17.74) while Dilorati did the same in the 100 fly (1:01.17). Gillespie also took second in the 200 breaststroke (2:37.82), where classmate
Annalise Grigereit posted a strong (2:45.52) third-place finish. The surprising Grigereit (2:27.92) also was part of an impressive 2-3-4 Tigers finish in the 200 IM with Gillespie (2:27.75) and senior
Molly Brown (2:32.11).
"I was especially impressed with Annalise today in the 200 breast and 200 IM, as well as a great butterfly split on the medley relay," Goodman James said. "This is the most assertive I have seen her in competition."
Grigereit swam a 28.88 split in the 200 medley relay, helping teammates Kaitlyn Martinez, Gillespie and Rebecca Adams take second place and add four points to CC's total.
