Weekly Release No. 2>
The Tigers kick off their 10-game home schedule this week with the 2013 Colorado College Invitational at Stewart Field. CC plays host to Appalachian State University in Friday's second game at 4 p.m. and the University of Vermont in the tournament finale at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Southern Utah University tangles with Vermont in Friday's first match 1:30 p.m. and Appalachian State at 10 a.m. Sunday. It marks the first time the tournament has been part of the schedule since 2009 when the Tigers posted victories over Drake University (3-2) and Washington State University (2-1).Â
Â
Colorado College enters Friday's contest with a 0-2-0 record falling on the road to the University of Denver, 2-1 in overtime, and the University of Colorado, 1-0, in the Colorado Cup last week. The Mountaineers split their first two home games, posting a 2-1 victory over East Tennessee State University last Friday and falling by the same score against Austin Peay State University two days later. The Catamounts also were involved in a pair of one-goal decisions, losing to Colgate University (2-1) on Friday and bouncing back to record a 2-1 triumph over Sacred Heart on Sunday. Southern Utah, which fell at CSU Bakersfield (4-1) last Friday, plays its home opener on Wednesday against UC Santa Barbara.   Â
Â
CC is playing both Appalachian State and Vermont for the first time. In fact, the Mountaineers and Catamounts are just two of the eight teams that are making their first appearance on the Colorado College schedule. The Tigers also play non-conference games against Drexel University, Loyola University of Chicago and Marquette University, as well as their first matches against new Conference USA members Louisiana Tech University, Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Texas San Antonio.
Â
With a pair of victories this weekend, Geoff Bennett would become the third head coach in program history to record 100 victories at Colorado College. His current record of 98-58-25 (.610) ranks third for total victories and fourth for winning percentage. Steve Paul posted an overall record of 110-46-8 (.695) from 1975-1982, including a 71-42-6 (.622) mark as a varsity program. Dang Pibulvech established both standards with a 119-26-6 (.804) mark from 1983 through 1990.
Â
Colorado College averages 0.50 goals per game while giving up 1.50. Sophomore midfielder Sarah Schweiss (Colorado Springs, CO) scored the Tigers' only goal on a penalty kick against Denver. Schweiss also led CC with eight shots, seven of which were on target. Senior midfielder Madison Whitehead (Highland Village, TX) and junior midfielder Jessie Ayers (Seattle, WA) also launched three shots apiece. Sophomore Kate Scheele (Seattle, WA) played all 187.35 in goal, posting a 1.44 goals-against average and a .800 saves percentage.
Â
The Tigers made up for the loss of eight graduating seniors by adding a pair of local products to the program as transfers. Junior Jennifer Stoot, a Cheyenne Mountain High School product who played at Purdue in 2011, and Schweiss, who spent her freshman season at TCU after graduating from Air Academy High School, add skill and experience to the lineup. A defensive midfielder, Stoot appeared in seven games during her freshman season with the Boilermakers and has three seasons of eligibility remaining. Schweiss appeared in 14 games, including 10 as a starter, for the Horned Frogs during the 2012 season. Despite missing seven games due to an injury, she worked her way back into the starting lineup for the final five contests and helped TCU advance to the championship game of the Big 12 tournament.
Â
In addition to CC's two transfers, four first-year Tigers will make their Stewart Field debut on Friday against Appalachian State. The newest Tigers are defender Pele Buika (Wailuku, HI), forward Chanisse Hendrix (Roseville, CA), midfielder Meghan Kilkenny (Lone Tree, CO) and Julia Lauzon (Surrey, B.C.).
Â
Next week, the Tigers travel to Milwaukee, Wis., for a pair of games at the Marquette Invitational. Colorado College opens with Loyola Chicago on Friday, Sept. 6, at 5 p.m. CT, and wraps up the weekend against the host Warriors on Sunday, Sept. 8, 1:30 p.m. CT.
