Box Score It was a long, wet afternoon, but Colorado College finally finished off another opponent for the fourth time in its last five matches.
Jessie Ayers' goal in the 59
th minute of play on Sunday snapped a scoreless deadlock and ignited the Tigers to a 2-0 victory over the University of Texas in a contest that ended four hours and 43 minutes after it started.
Â
Playing in a steady downpour after nearly a three-hour delay due to lightning strikes that started just 5:46 into the contest, CC also used a late tally by
Kaeli Vandersluis and seven saves by sophomore goalkeeper
Kate Scheele, to improve to 4-3 for the campaign.Â
Â
The Longhorns dropped to 4-3-1.
Â
Scheele's shutout was her fourth of the season and the eighth of her collegiate career.
Â
The game started as scheduled, at noon on the natural grass at Stewart Field. By the time the lightning subsided and play resumed at 2:54 p.m., Stewart was too soggy and the action moved to the artificial surface at Washburn Field. Â
Â
Ayers gave Scheele all the cushion she needed at the 58:45 mark, getting a touch on a Vandersluis cross from the right side and sending the deflection past UT keeper Abby Smith. Vandersluis added an insurance goal with 7:52 remaining, converting off a corner kick by
Sarah Schweiss from the opposite side.
Â
The goals were the second of the season for junior midfielders Ayers and Vandersluis.
Â
The Tigers out-shot Texas by a 15-9 margin overall, but managed only four attempts on target as Smith finished with two saves in the loss. Scheele made five of her seven stops in the second half.
