CC earns 2-2 tie with Providence

Box Score Less than 20 ticks away from victory in regulation, Colorado College found some redemption after a scoreless overtime on Friday.

Officially, the result goes in the books as a 2-2 non-conference tie with No. 7-ranked Providence College in the opener of the teams' two-game non-conference series at the World Arena. But thanks to exhibition shootout goals by Alexander Krushelnsyki, Scott Wamsganz and Jordan DiGiando, the Tigers were able to leave the ice with a modest sense of satisfaction.

"We still have to learn to close things out," CC coach Scott Owens said after the visiting Friars averted defeat with an extra-attacker goal with 19.8 seconds left in the third period. "It's tough on the guys. We played decent in the overtime and it was good to win the shootout – for the guys and the fans."

Junior right winger Charlie Taft's backhand that beat Providence netminder Jon Gillies from the left edge of the crease snapped a 1-1 deadlock and gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead at 17:21 of the third stanza. But PC's Mark Jankowski, who set up an earlier tally by senior defenseman Steven Shamanski, was able to sneak a rebound past Colorado College goaltender Josh Thorimbert with Gillies on the bench to force the extra session.

Senior left wing Alexander Krushelnyski, who set up Taft's red lighter, also clicked on a shorthanded breakaway to put CC up 1-0 at 3:01 of the middle frame.

Thorimbert finished with 36 saves, half of them coming in a scoreless first period when he steered away 10 attempts during the Friars' first of five power plays. Gillies, who played for Team USA with Tigers freshman defenseman Jaccob Slavin at the recent Junior World Championships in Sweden, made 27 stops in the contest.

"The way they came out on that power play, I mean that could have been disastrous for us, especially going against Gillies," said Owens. "But Josh made big saves for us and gave us that chance.

"We scored first and that gave our guys a spark. Then Josh continued to play very strong all the way through. It's just a shame for him that he doesn't pick up the win and keep it to one goal. Without him, especially early in the first period, we would've been down 2-0 and that would have been a big hill to climb."

Colorado College, now 2-15-4 overall for the season, plays host to the Friars in a rematch at 7:07 p.m. Saturday. Providence takes a 13-5-5 record into the contest.
