Box Score Colorado College struck quickly and never looked back on Friday.
Â
Ignited by freshman
Alex Roos' sixth goal of the season
just 92 seconds into the contest, CC scored three times in the first period and recorded a 4-1 victory over Miami University in the opener of their two-game National Collegiate Hockey Association series at the World Arena.
Â
Freshman defenseman
Gustav Olofsson and junior right wing
Charlie Taft also clicked for red lighters in the early uprising as the Tigers improved to 3-16-4 overall and 3-7-3-1 in the NCHC to climb past Miami in the league standings.
Â
The RedHawks, picked in the pre-season to finish first, dropped to 9-11-3 overall and into eighth place at 3-9-1-1 in conference play heading into Saturday's rematch.
Â
Senior goaltender
Josh Thorimbert, who lost his bid for a shutout with 46 seconds left in the game, finished with 30 saves in the triumph.
Â
Senior left wing
Alexander Krushelnyski set up the early tally by Roos and added an empty-net goal with 10 seconds remaining in a game that saw 10 different Tigers log at least one point.
Â
"It was a good team win," said head coach Scott Owens. "We needed everybody tonight and everybody got minutes. Josh (Thorimbert) looked solid. It feels good to win on Friday night and pick up a victory against a good team in our building."
Â
Junior defenseman
Aaron Harstad collected a pair of assists while
Sam Rothstein,
Archie Skalbeck,
Jaccob Slavin,
Hunter Fejes and
Cody Bradley joined Krushelnyski with one apiece. Skalbeck and Slavin combined to set up Olofsson's game-winning goal, a rising snap shot through traffic at 6:14 of the opening frame, after Rothstein started a slam-bang passing play that resulted in the tally by Roos at 1:32.
Â
Taft pounced on his own rebound to make it 3-0 at 15:45 after taking a pass inside the MU blue line from Fejes.
Â
"We came out strong in the first period and weathered the storm a little in the second," said senior defenseman and team captain
Eamonn McDermott. "Then it was sort of in spurts the rest of the way. Our forwards did a good job of controlling the puck down low tonight, which was huge."
Â
Miami's Cody Murphy got the RedHawks on the scoreboard at 19:14 of the third period, converting on a backhand out of a scramble in front after Thorimbert stopped his initial shot.
