Box ScoreFor the second consecutive night, the Colorado College hockey team rebounded from a disappointing second period to claim a one-goal victory, defeating Alabama-Huntsville 4-3 Saturday at The Broadmoor World Arena. Senior team captain
Peter Stoykewych scored the game-winner with 5:26 remaining in the third period to give CC its first two-game sweep at home since November of 2012.
Â
Stoykewych took a pass between the circles from junior
Peter Maric and buried a shot past UAH netminder Matt Larose as the Tigers won both games at home in the same weekend for the first time since defeating Bemidji State on Nov. 9-10, 2012. Sophomore
Christian Heil also collected an assist on Stoykewych's 4-on-4 goal.
Â
Stoykewych and Heil had a big part in CC storming out to a 3-0 lead early in the second period. After junior
Hunter Fejes scored his first goal since his freshman campaign with a shorthanded tally 8:59 into the first period, Stoykewych assisted on sophomore
Alex Roos' tally with just four seconds left in the first stanza. Sophomore
Sam Rothstein gained his first point of the season with an assist on the play.
Â
Heil made it 3-0 for the Tigers when he took a drop pass from sophomore
Matt Hansen and beat Larose into an open net just 25 seconds into the second period. At that point, CC's struggles in Friday's second period seemed like a distant memory. However, by the end of the second 20 minutes tonight, UAH had fought back to tie the game at 3-all thanks to a pair of goals by Brandon Carlson and one from Frank Misuraca. All three goals came at the expense of CC freshman goalie
Chase Perry, who made nine saves before exiting the game prior to the beginning of the third period in favor of sophomore
Tyler Marble.
Â
Marble, who made 16 saves in Friday's 3-2 victory, made 14 in the third period alone on Saturday to move to 2-0 this season.
Â
"This was a great weekend for us," said first-year head coach
Mike Haviland. "This team really showed what kind of character and perseverance is in that locker room."
Â
The Tigers peppered Larose with 45 shots and attempted at least 40 shots in consecutive games (they had 40 on Friday) for the first time since the second and third games of the 2012-13 campaign (Clarkson and Air Force). However, CC could not capitalize on any of its six power-play chances Saturday, while the Chargers were 1-for-3 on the power play and had 26 shots.
Â
CC stays at home to face second-ranked North Dakota next Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17-18.
