Box ScoreNorth Dakota scored all three of its goals within a 3 minute, 25 second span late in the first period Friday night and defeated Colorado College, 3-1, at The Broadmoor World Arena. Mark MacMillan scored twice, including one with two seconds left in the first stanza, as No. 3 UND improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference while CC fell to 2-1 and 0-1.
Â
UND outshot the Tigers 14-8 in the first period but CC had two quality opportunities just before UND got on the board. Sophomore
Christian Heil was stoned on a breakaway by North Dakota goalie Zane McIntyre with 4:20 left in the period, then junior
Hunter Fejes was denied by McIntyre from point-blank range just seconds later. After that sequence, CC freshman
Teemu Kivihalme was called for a slashing penalty.
Â
MacMillan took advantage and put UND ahead 1-0 at the 16:33 mark when he somehow got a stick on the puck during a scrum in the crease and slid it by CC goalie
Tyler Marble for a power-play goal. Brendan O'Donnell scored to make it 2-0 just 44 seconds later when he slashed by the Tiger defense and found himself all alone in front of the net. Connor Gaarder, who fed O'Donnell perfectly from behind the net, and Paul LaDue collected assists.
Â
MacMillan then struck again with just two seconds remaining in the period when he deflected a blast from the point by Troy Stecher past Marble. Nick Schmaltz also gained an assist on the play.
Â
"We played well the first 15 minutes," said Colorado College head coach
Mike Haviland. "I liked the way we competed and we never gave up. We need to tighten some things up but if we continue to work hard, good things will happen."
Â
Good things happened in the second period for CC, outshooting UND 15-11 and cutting the lead to 3-1 at the six minute mark when Fejes scored his second goal of the season. Freshman
Garrett Cecere took a shot from the point that went wide but came right back to the side of the net, where Fejes was waiting and he stuffed the puck past UND netminder Zane McIntyre. Kivihalme posted his first career assist on Fejes' goal.
Â
Unfortunately, the Tigers could not get anything else past McIntyre, who finished with 31 saves, while Marble had 36 for CC. Both penalty kill units were solid Friday night as the Tigers were 1-for-7 on the power play and UND was 1-of-5.
Â
The two teams meet again on Saturday, Oct. 18 beginning at 7:07 pm (MT). Â
