Tigers Sink No. 9 Christopher Newport

CC records third victory over a top-20 opponent this season

Box Score No. 11 Colorado College earned a pair of dominating victories on its home court, Reid Arena, to earn a 10-game home winning streak. The Tigers swept the University of Wisconsin-Superior and came back in the final match of the day to beat ninth-ranked Christopher Newport University in four sets.

CC's aggressive defense and strong serving kept Christopher Newport's offense off balance to earn a 25-19, 25-15, 20-25, 29-27 victory, Friday evening. The Tigers held the Captains to a season-low .171 hitting percentage, while forcing them into a season-high 31 hitting errors.

"I thought we really controlled the first two sets with aggressive serving and passing," said head coach Rick Swan. "They are a strong hitting team and we were able to get some big blocks at the net.

"We got tentative in game three, but came back and battled in game four to beat the ninth ranked team in the country."

This was the third victory this season the Tigers had over a ranked opponent. CC, which dominated in hitting percentage, blocks and serving against the Captains, beat No. 17 Clarkson University, 3-0 on Sept. 5 and No. 16 Trinity University, 3-2 on Sept. 27.

Freshman Glenna Yancey and sophomore Rebecca Watson each had a hand on a career-high seven blocks, while sophomore Keli Sherwood added six blocks for the team's season-high 15 blocks over CNU.

Watson led the Tigers tying her career-high four service aces to account for nearly half of the team's 10 aces. The setter also orchestrated the offense with a season-high 33 assists.

Without right side hitter Courtney Birkett in the lineup, Colorado College had some big plays by juniors McQella Adams and Emily Phillips.

"McQella Adams came in and was big at blocking for us today," said Swan. "Emily Phillips came in and got three big side outs and Rebecca Watson did a really good job of running the offense."

Sophomore Abbe Holtze led the team on offense for the 12th and 13th time this season with 14 kills against Christopher Newport and 18 against Wisconsin-Superior. The outside hitter also earned a pair of double-doubles picking up 14 digs against the Captains and 18 digs against the Yellowjackets.

Colorado College beat Wisconsin-Superior, 25-9, 25-23, 25-10 in its first match of the Pikes Peak Challenge. The Tigers earned their second strongest hitting performance of the season with a .383 attack percentage with 53 kills, while holding the Yellowjackets to just 25 kills.

Watson led the team in serving with her career-high four aces, while Sherwood picked up 12 kills to aid CC's offense.

Kristen Liberty was flawless at the net hitting 7-of-17 without an error for a .412 attack percentage against Wisconsin-Superior.

Colorado College continues its run in the Pikes Peak Challenge on Saturday, playing No. 22 Nebraska Wesleyan University at 12 p.m. and UC Santa Cruz at 6 p.m.
