Box Score Colorado College exploded for three goals during a span of 13:45 midway through the second half to defeat Utah State in a first-round match at the 2014 Mountain West Women's Soccer Championship at San Diego State University on Tuesday night.
Jessie Ayers tied the game with 26:39 remaining after making a run up the left flank. She played a touch to
Sarah Schweiss, who then pushed the attack forward before sending Ayers toward the goal with a pinpoint pass.
Schweiss put CC in the lead 5:25 later, chipping a pass from senior midfielder
Jordan Savold who played a ball into the box. It proved to be the fifth game-winning goal of the season for the junior midfielder.
Ayers added an insurance goal with 12:54 to play, finishing off a set piece sent in from senior forward
Rachel Herron.
With her first multiple-goal game of the season, Ayers became the fifth Tiger to score 30 or more goals and now ranks fourth in school history with 31. The senior midfielder also climbed into fifth place on the career list with 72 points.
Colorado College became just the second Mountain West opponent to score two or more goals against the Aggies this season.
Utah State took the lead midway through the first half when sophomore midfielder Lauren Harmon found the net with a header off of a corner kick by senior defender Brooke Larson-Leavitt.
Freshman goalkeeper
Rowan Frederiksen finished with two saves for CC, while Utah State junior keeper Jeannie Woller turned away three shots.
The Tigers finished with a 14-13 edge in total shots and a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Colorado College will play No. 1 seed and tournament host San Diego State University on Thursday at 7 p.m. PT. Utah State finished the 2014 season with a 10-8-2 record.
