San Diego State Slips Past CC On Penalty Kicks

Box Score Colorado College had the better of it during the first 110 minutes, but San Diego State prevailed in a penalty-kicks shootout to advance to Saturday's championship game of the 2014 Mountain West Tournament.

The top-seeded Aztecs converted on three of their four attempts and junior goalkeeper Melanie Vaughn came up with a big stop on a CC's final attempt by Alexis Long.

For the second year in a row, the Tigers saw their season end with what was officially a 1-1 tie.

Colorado College had a chance to secure the victory in the final seconds of the first overtime, but it couldn't get a clean shot off of a direct kick by Kaeli Vandersluis and the SDSU was able to clear the ball out of the penalty area.

The Aztecs had an opportunity early in the second overtime, but the CC defense blocked a shot by Haley Locker from five yards out in the center of the box.

Jessie Ayers put the Tigers on the board in the 12th minute, bending a shot from three yards off the right end line into the top left corner after taking a touch from Vandersluis.

With her eighth goal of the season and fourth in the last three games, Ayers climbed into a tie for third place on the program's all-time list with Karla Thompson, who scored 32 from 1988-91.

The senior midfielder finished her career with six goals and seven points on postseason play.

Vandersluis moved into a tie for sixth place with her 18th career assist, matching the totals set by Robyn Neigel (1988-91) and Rebecca Carroll (1999-02).

Locker tied the game in the 58th minute on her team's first shot on frame, working a give and go with Morgan Darling and scoring from four yards out.

Colorado College dominated the first half statistically, launching 10 total shots compared to only two for SDSU.

San Diego State didn't take its first shot until there was only 13:46 remaining in the opening frame.

Goalkeeper Rowan Fredericksen stopped two shots for CC and completed her first season with an 11-4-3 record.

Vaughn made five saves for the Aztecs.

The Tigers posted a 6-1-1 record in their final eight games and finished the season with a 12-5-4 record.

San Diego State improved to 14-4-2 and will play Wyoming at 7 p.m. PT.

In the first semifinal, Laurel Ramer scored 3:12 into overtime to give the Cowgirls a 2-1 victory over New Mexico.
