Another Friday Heartbreaker

Box Score | Highlights from NCHC.tv

Frederik Tiffels scored twice, including the game-winner with 3:02 remaining in overtime, to lead Western Michigan to a 3-2 victory over Colorado College Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena. Sheldon Dries added a goal and an assist as the Broncos improved to 6-8-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the NCHC while CC fell to 3-11 overall and 0-8 in league play.

CC's Peter Stoykewych was called for interference at the 1:48 mark of the extra frame and the Broncos took advantage right away. Dries won the ensuing faceoff and Tiffels gathered a pass from Justin Kovacs above the left circle before sending a shot that beat Tiger netminder Tyler Marble.

"We battled hard tonight and found a way to tie it late in the game," said CC head coach Mike Haviland. "Unfortunately we gave them a power play in the overtime and they took advantage."

Tiffels had given WMU a 2-1 lead at the 14:06 mark of the third period from deep in the left circle that went top shelf over Marble. The Tigers battled back and were rewarded in the final seconds of regulation. Neal Goff was called for a tripping penalty with 1:35 left and Haviland pulled Marble with one minute left, creating a 6-on-4 situation. Cody Bradley pounded home a centering pass from Hunter Fejes while streaking down the slot with 3.1 seconds remaining that evened the score at 2-all. Charlie Taft also claimed an assist on Bradley's team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Following a scoreless first period in which WMU outshot the Tigers 10-4, Teemu Kivihalme gave CC a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 3:31 into the second period. With the Tigers set up in the WMU zone, Kivihalme took a pass from Scott Wamsganz at the left point and ripped a shot that got behind Western Michigan goalie Lukas Hafner and snuck inside the far post. Kivihalme now has four goals this season, second-most on the team. Bradley notched his team-leading sixth assist of the campaign on the play.

Dries evened the score at the 14:41 mark of the second with a fortunate bounce in front of CC's net. Dries was heading behind the net from the right circle and his backhanded pass from the goal line deflected off Slavin's stick in the crease and went between Marble's legs.

Marble made 26 saves in his first action since Nov. 14 and the Tigers posted more than one power-play goal in a game (2-for-4) this season. The Tigers have now scored on the power-play in each of its last three games. Hafner made 18 saves for WMU and the Broncos were 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

"Tyler played well tonight," said Haviland. "He didn't give up many rebounds."

The teams will face off on Saturday, Dec. 13, beginning at 7 p.m. (ET).
