Box Score (pdf)Kyle Osterberg scored with 1:28 remaining in overtime to lift No. 8/9 Minnesota Duluth to a 3-2 come from behind victory over Colorado College Friday night at AMSOIL Arena. With the victory, UMD improved to 10-5 overall and 6-3 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference while the Tigers fell to 3-9 overall and 0-6 in league play.
Â
CC held on to a 2-1 lead into the waning minutes of the third period until Alex Iafallo evened the score with 2:53 remaining. Adam Krause's shot was blocked by teammate Dominic Toninato in front the Tiger net and the puck went right to Iafallo, who was streaking down the slot. Iafallo put a one-timer past a CC netminder
Chase Perry, who was trying to regain his footing after Krause's attempt.
Â
Perry, who then made four saves in the overtime period, poked away shots from Justin Crandall and Cal Decowski just before Osterberg put home the game-winner for his third tally of the season. It was an unfortunate ending for the Tigers, who led after the first and second periods for just the second time this season. Â
Â
"It was really nice to see us execute our game plan tonight," said CC head coach
Mike Haviland. "You can start to see our identity. Our guys are committed to do things the right way. It is sad they weren't rewarded for their efforts against a very good team."
Â
CC sophomore
Sam Rothstein opened the scoring with his first goal of the season midway through the first period on the power play. Senior
Scott Wamsganz started the play behind the net and found
Cody Bradley along the right boards. Bradley sent a nice pass in front of the net to Rothstein, who put the puck in the back of the net past UMD goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo.
Â
"It's good for Sam to get one," said Haviland. "It was a bit of a relief for him."
Â
Hunter Fejes made it 2-0 for the Tigers just 2:57 into the second period with an outstanding individual effort. He took a head pass from Bradley at the UMD blue line and held off a Duluth defender all the way to the net before sliding a backhander through the legs of Kaskisuo for his third goal of the campaign. Â
Â
UMD's Tony Cameranesi cut the lead in half 7:11 into the second period. He took a pass from behind the net by Karson Kuhlman and was wide open at the left post and put a shot past Perry, who finished the game with 30 saves and the Tiger defense killed all four penalties.
Â
"We won the special teams war tonight," Haviland said. "Which makes the loss even harder to swallow."Â Â
Â
The Tigers were 1-for-3 on the power play and attempted 23 shots, led by Fejes' four attempts. "We had everybody on board tonight," said Haviland. "If we keep playing like this, we will get rewarded."
Â
The teams will play Saturday night beginning at 7:07 p.m. (CT).
