CC Downed by No. 8 Minnesota Duluth, 7-2

Box Score (pdf)

Adam Krause and Austin Farley each had a goal and an assist Saturday night to lead eighth-ranked Minnesota Duluth past Colorado College, 7-2, at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn. Cal Decowski added two assists as the Bulldogs improved to 11-5 overall and 7-3 in the NCHC while the Tigers fell to 3-10 and 0-7.

Austyn Young put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 at the 5:39 mark of the first period. Young gathered the puck at the CC blue line, skated towards the goal and his centering pass deflected off CC defenseman's Ian Young's skate into the net past Tiger netminder Chase Perry. UMD had a 10-3 advantage in shots during the first 20 minutes as the Bulldogs kept the puck in the Tiger zone for the majority of the frame.

Duluth's leading scorer, Dominic Toninato, made it 2-0 just 1:39 into the second period when he came out from behind the net and his shot from the bottom of the right circle snuck past Perry inside the far post. Krause and Alex Iafallo gathered assists on the play. Three minutes later, Andy Welinski scored a power-play goal after taking a circle-to-circle pass from Cal Decowski. Farley started the play by wheeling around the net and finding Decowski along the boards.

Tony Cameranesi made it a 4-0 game at the 1:22 mark of the third period when he scored off a rebound after an initial shot from the right point by Brenden Kotyk.

"You can't let a good team like that get out to a big lead," said CC head coach Mike Haviland. "You also don't want to give up goals in the first few minutes of a period and that's what we did in the second and third tonight."

Jared Hanson put the Tigers on the board with a power-play goal at the 5:26 mark of the third period. Jordan Berger found Peter Stoykewych at the blue line and Stoykewych's shot was saved by Kaskisuo but Hanson was right on the doorstep to bang home the rebound. Scott Wamsganz then scored just over two minutes later to cut the lead to 4-2 by scoring from his knees with a pair of Bulldogs draped on him. Matt Hansen's shot from the slot was knocked down by Kaskisuo and Wamsganz reached in the crease from right beside the net and knocked it in for his third goal in the last five games.

"It was nice to get a couple of goals in the third and get some momentum," said Haviland. "We did a good job in the first 10 minutes of the third period. It is a simple game and you get rewarded when you go the dirty areas and put the puck on net."

Justin Crandall made it 5-2 at the 9:51 mark when he chipped a rebound over Perry after a scrum in front of the net and Krause and Farley scored 1:07 apart in the final minutes. The Bulldogs attempted 43 shots, the most by a CC opponent this season, while the Tigers had 18, their second-lowest shot total of the campaign. Perry made 36 saves while Kaskisuo had 16.

The Tigers play at Western Michigan next weekend, Dec. 12-13.
