CC bids farewell to Olofsson

Freshman defenseman decides to turn pro after one season with Tigers

Less than six months after making his debut at Colorado College, Gustav Olofsson has left the Tigers.

The Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League announced earlier this week that they had signed Olofsson, who finished the 2013-14 campaign with four goals and four assists in 30 games for CC, to a three-year entry level contract starting next season.

According to the WIld, who selected the 6-3, 190-pound defenseman in the second round of the 2013 NHL entry draft, he was to report to the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League on an amateur tryout.

"We enjoyed having Gustav this season," said CC head coach Scott Owens. "He was a good Tiger and played a significant role on our  'D' corp. We wish him well as he moves on to his professional career."

Olofsson helped his native Sweden claim a silver medal at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championships in early January. His five points (1g,4a) in the tournament prompted Minnesota to gauge his interest in joining the Western Hockey League's Portland (Ore.) Winterhawks at mid-season. Olofsson opted to remain with the Tigers at the time.

"We're excited to get [him] under contract," Brent Flahr, assistant general manager of the Wild, said of the recent signing. "His performance this year at the World Junior Championships and at Colorado College exceeded our expectations and we're confident that he's ready for the next challenge in his young career. His skill set really excites us going forward. We're looking forward to seeing him continue his development at the pro level."

Olofsson, who won't turn 20 years old until Dec. 1, was one of five NHL draft picks to play for the Tigers in '13-14.
