Warming up for league play

Tigers battle tough in back-to-back 5-4 non-conference defeats

Despite two consecutive days of dead-even results in singles play, the taste of victory eluded Colorado College this weekend.

The Tigers bounced back from a pair of recent shutout losses to give Hastings College and Arizona Christian University a run for their Monday at CC's Burghart Courts on Saturday and Sunday, but fell by a 5-4 count to both opponents while dropping to 5-6 overall for the season.

"It just goes to show how important doubles are," said junior team captain Jack Burger, who joined sophomore Ross Sherman in posting straight-set singles triumphs against both opponents.

Burger prevailed over Hastings' Joe Ritzdorf (6-4, 6-2) and ACU's David Castano (6-4, 6-3) at No. 3 singles on back-to-back days. He and freshman Levi Kimmel were unable to take either of their doubles matches, however, as the visiting Broncos and Firestorm each claimed two of three from CC.

Still, Burger found his teams' competiveness encouraging as the Tigers get ready to kick off Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play next month.

"It was a pretty good weekend for me, personally, just a bummer that we couldn't get a win," he said. "All the teams we've been playing have been good teams, though, and we've hung in there pretty well against them. I think that really will help us going into our conference matches."

Sophomores Dylan Ball and Taylor Delehanty teamed up to claim a pair of No. 3 doubles decisions, beating Hastings 9-7 and Arizona Christian 8-5. Delehanty also came out on top in No. 5 singles on Sunday, persevering over ACU's Michael Munguia in a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 marathon. Kimmel registered CC's other singles victory against Hastings on Saturday, recovering from a first-set defeat to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2.

The Tigers play the other three SCAC members – Schreiner University, Trinity University and Southwestern University – in their respective Texas cities on April 18, 19 and 20 before the league tournament gets under way a week later in San Antonio.
