Schweiss nets pair, but Tigers fall to UNC

Box Score Junior midfielder Sarah Schweiss struck twice, but a three-goal deficit proved too large to overcome as Colorado College dropped a 3-2 decision at the University of Northern Colorado in the season opener for both teams on a rainy Friday night.

The crowd of 327 at Jackson Field witnessed history as UNC ended its 15-game winless streak against the Tigers.

Sophomore midfielder Kassy Castillo scored twice just over 10 minutes apart to give the Bears a 2-0 lead with 20:18 remaining in the first half, and then freshman forward Brooke Braden struck for what proved to be the game winner just 2:19 later.

Schweiss put CC on the board when she knocked home a deflection off the defense with 10:02 to play in the first half, and then pulled the Tigers to within a goal when she converted off a cross from senior forward Rachel Herron in the 56th minute.

Colorado College had a pair of excellent scoring chances during the closing minutes, but junior goalkeeper Kaitlin Ruff made diving stop on Schweiss with 20:02 remaining and on a blast by senior midfielder Jessie Ayers with 11:24 to play.

Ruff finished with four saves.

Rowan Frederiksen steered aside two shots in her collegiate debut for the Tigers.

CC finished with a 19-8 margin in total shots, including a decisive 11-2 advantage in the second half. Colorado College also recorded a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Tigers play host to the University of Denver at Stewart Field on Sunday at 2 p.m.
