Box Score Dana Gornick could not have picked a better night to score her first goal at Colorado College.
Gornick scored with 4:59 remaining in the first half and the defense made it stand up as CC held on for a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Oakland University on Friday night at Washburn Field.
"It was a tough win, a tough night and a tough opponent," head coach
Geoff Bennett said. "I thought Oakland was very good. Everything we heard about them was true. They possess the ball and they have some very technical players."
Jessie Ayers ignited the winning sequence by chasing down a long service on the right side. The senior midfielder worked her way around a pair of defenders along the end line and slipped a pass to Gornick, and the sophomore midfielder buried her only shot of the night inside the right post.
"We've seen that a lot in practice where Jessie dribbles to the end line and slips the ball through, so it was kind of like muscle memory," Gornick said. "It was high time for me. I'm glad my dad was here to see it."
At the other end of the field, the Tigers surrendered only six shots en route to their third shutout in four games.
Freshman goalkeeper
Rowan Frederiksen stopped the only shot the Golden Grizzlies put on frame and extended her scoreless streak to 462:45.
Frederiksen and the defense came up big midway through the first half when Vladanka Gurovski took a pair of shots from eight yards in front of the left post. Frederiksen stopped the first attempt and the defense blocked the second off the initial rebound.
"I'm thrilled with another clean sheet," Bennett said. "It was another good game by Rowan and our back line. It's great to see Dana score, a different player score. That's the way it's been for us the last couple of years. Little by little, we're getting better every game."
Stephanie Bukovec made five saves for Oakland, which slipped to 1-6 on the season.
CC finished with a 13-6 advantage in total shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Colorado College (3-1-2) puts its 17-match home winning streak on the line against Central Michigan University on Sunday.
