Avery Peterson scored two second-period goals and added an assist and Ryan Massa made 27 saves in his first action in nearly a month to lead No. 7 Nebraska Omaha to a 4-1 victory over Colorado College Saturday night at The Broadmoor World Arena. The Mavericks, who hold on to first place in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, improved to 15-6-3 overall and 9-4-1-1 in the league, while CC fell to 5-14-1 overall and 1-9-1 in the NCHC.

CC's Scott Wamsganz opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the season by banging home a rebound past Massa at the 8:18 mark of the first period. Massa saved a point-blank shot by Luc Gerdes, but could not handle Wamsganz' from in front. Aaron Harstad also collected an assist on the play. Unfortunately for the Tigers, that was all they could get past Massa, who hadn't played since Dec. 21 due to illness and injury.

Peterson evened the game at 1-1 with his first goal of the second period coming at the 12:32 mark. UNO's David Pope forced a CC turnover behind the Tiger net and the puck came free to Peterson, who was all alone in the slot and sent a wrist shot past goalie Chase Perry (10 saves). Peterson struck again and scored the game-winner with 49.5 seconds remaining in the second period when he lifted a shot over Perry during a scrum in front of the Tiger net. Joel Messner assisted on the play after Perry saved his initial shot.

UNO, which placed just 14 shots on net in the game, got an insurance goal from Tanner Lane 1:48 into the third period to make it 3-1. CC's Hunter Fejes had a golden opportunity to cut into that lead with three minutes left, but his rebound shot clanged off the crossbar and UNO's Austin Ortega sealed it with an empty-netter with 1:32 remaining.

"I thought we played a pretty good game tonight," said CC head coach Mike Haviland. "We just can't make the mistakes we made."

The Tigers gained momentum early in the contest after killing off three penalties in the first 11 minutes, allowing the Mavericks just two shots. UNO finished the game 0-for-5 on the power play and CC has killed 41 of its last 46 penalties. The Tigers were 0-for-3 on the power play Saturday.

Fejes led all players with six shots, followed by Wamsganz with a career-high five. Peterson led the Mavericks with four shots on goal.

Colorado College travels to No. 2 North Dakota next weekend for a two-game series, Jan. 23-24.
