No. 2 North Dakota Downs Tigers, 5-3

Box Score

Second-ranked North Dakota completed a two-game sweep of Colorado College with a 5-3 victory Saturday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena. UND improved to 18-5-2 overall and 9-4-1 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, while the Tigers fell to 5-16-1 and 1-11-1 in league play.

After just three goals were scored in UND's 2-1 victory on Friday, the two teams combined for four goals in the first period alone on Saturday. UND's Luke Johnson opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 3:50 mark, sending a slapshot from the right point past CC goalie Tyler Marble. The Tigers responded with a power-play goal of their own at 12:41 when Charlie Taft knocked in a rebound past UND netminder Zane McIntyre. Peter Stoykewych took a pass from Zach Aman and his shot was kicked out by McIntyre, but went right to Taft at the right circle.

Stephane Pattyn put UND ahead 2-1 just 1:17 later with a rebound goal of his own after a 4-on-1 rush and an initial shot by Colten St. Clair was saved by Marble. Shortly after Taft took a shot to the head by Gage Ausmus, who was called for charging, Scott Wamsganz tied the game at 2-2 by redirecting a blast from Teemu Kivihalme past McIntyre. Cody Bradley earned his team-leading 12th assist, and his second of the weekend, on the play.

"We played a great first period tonight," said CC head coach Mike Haviland. "We actually played five good periods against a really good team this weekend."

After scoring more than one power-play goal in a period for the first time this season, the Tigers struggled to produce a consistent offensive presence for the next 30 minutes of play. UND put 16 shots on net in the second period and Mark MacMillan scored his second goal in as many nights with a slap shot from the slot that beat Marble on his glove side with 2:41 remaining in the second frame for a 3-2 lead. CC had 15 shots in the final two periods, including just four in the second period.

Bryn Chyzyk gave North Dakota an insurance goal at the 8:41 mark of the third period with a wrister from the right circle that clanged off the crossbar and into the net behind Marble. The Tigers put some pressure on North Dakota in the final 10 minutes and McIntyre was forced to make a couple of point-blank saves with five minutes remaining. CC closed the gap to 4-3 when Aaron Harstad connected on a blast from the left-wing boards with an extra attacker on the ice with 1:53 remaining in the third period.

With Marble still on the bench, UND's Drake Caggiula closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal with 27 seconds left. Marble finished the game with 30 saves and McIntyre had 25. UND's Brendan O'Donnell led all players with five shots, while Taft led the Tigers with four. CC was 2-for-3 on the power play and UND finished the game 1-for-3.

"We have made tremendous progress, but it is time to step through and find a way to win hockey games," said Haviland.

After playing 15 of their last 18 games on the road, the Tigers play eight of their final 11 at home, beginning next weekend with a two-game series against St. Cloud State at The Broadmoor World Arena.
