Sunday's Game NotesDespite a career-high 48 saves by
Tyler Marble, the Colorado College hockey team suffered a heartbreaking, 5-4 overtime loss to No. 16 Providence Saturday night at Schneider Arena. Mark Jankowski lifted a shot past Marble with 31.1 seconds left in the extra period as the Tigers fell in overtime for the third time in their last five games.
Â
Marble was stellar Saturday night, posting the most saves by a CC goalie since
Josh Thorimbert had 50 in a 2-2 draw at Minnesota Duluth on Feb. 7, 2014.
Â
"Tyler was outstanding tonight," said CC head coach
Mike Haviland. "This was his best game of the year. You feel bad that he has to take the loss."
Â
Three Tigers,
Zach Aman,
Michael King and
Ian Young each scored his first goal of the season. King not only notched his first goal of the season, but the first of his career to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead at the 7:53 mark of the third period. King fired a one-timer from the center point past Providence goalie Jon Gillies after taking a pass from
Scott Wamsganz. Wamsganz, who has a point in six of his last eight games, gathered the puck along the boards after Gillies made a save on a wrist shot in the slot by
Jaccob Slavin.
Â
The Friars' Noel Acciari, who had evened the game at 2-2 just 42 seconds into the third period, tied it again at 3-3 at the 13:36 mark, then Brandon Tanev scored 15 seconds later to give Providence (12-6-1) a 4-3 lead.
Â
Young then scored his first of the season with 2:42 left in the third to make it 4-4.
Sam Rothstein posted his second point of the night, finding Young streaking down the left side with a beautiful pass from the right-wing boards to cap a five-goal period for the two teams. Â Â
Â
"It was nice to see King get that one, then Young sneaking down the back side," said Haviland. "You have to give the guys a lot of credit, battling back with a late goal. You feel bad for them but we still did a lot of good things against a very good opponent."
Â
Anthony Florentino opened the scoring just 3:35 into the contest for the Friars by slipping a shot past a screened Marble. Tanev and Kevin Rooney assisted on the play. The Friars outshot CC, 18-7, in the first stanza and Marble's 17 saves were the most in one period in his career.
Â
The Tigers (3-12-1) put together a strong second period and took the lead with a couple of goals. Aman evened the game with his first goal of the season at the 5:39 mark.
Luc Gerdes started the play with a pass from behind the net to
Charlie Taft, whose shot from the top of the left circle was saved by Gillies. The puck was loose behind Gillies and Aman slid through the crease and banged it in.
Â
Rothstein put the Tigers up 2-1 at 8:35 of the middle frame with a wrist shot from the left circle that went top shelf over Gillies' left shoulder. Gerdes, who produced the second two-point game of his career, brought the puck through the neutral zone and found Rothstein at the Providence blue line. Marble had 13 saves in the frame for the Tigers, who had been outscored 24-11 in the second period entering the game.
Â
"This is a tough building to play in," said Haviland. "We are taking those steps, we need to take the next step. We can't get too low now and have to come back for an early game tomorrow."
Â
Each team took three penalties and was 0-3 on the power play. Providence outshot the Tigers, 53-26, and was led by Trevor Mingoia, who assisted on Jankowski's game-winner, with a game-high nine shots. Taft led the Tigers and tied his season high with five shots.
Â
The two teams will play on Sunday, beginning at 4 p.m. (ET).
