Box ScoreThe special teams were certainly special for Colorado College Tuesday night as the Tigers went 3-for-5 on the power play and killed off all six penalties in a 4-1 victory over UConn at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. With the victory, the Tigers snapped a seven-game winless streak and claimed their first road win of the season in the team's final non-conference contest.
Â
"Our guys played a real good hockey game," said CC head coach
Mike Haviland. "We really took over after the 10-minute mark of the first. It's nice to get that first one on the road."
Â
Jaccob Slavin had a goal and two assists to post CC's first three-point game since March 15, 2013, when
Alexander Krushelnyski had a goal and two assists at Denver. Slavin assisted on
Scott Wamsganz' game-winner that broke a 1-1 tie with a man advantage at the 8:43 mark of the second period, then scored his first goal of the season on the power play 3:18 into the third period. He also picked up an assist later in the third when
Zach Aman made it 4-1 with 2:53 remaining by lifting a shot over UConn goalie Rob Nichols (31 saves).
Â
Charlie Taft opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 16:20 mark of the first period off assists from Aman and
Hunter Fejes, who became the first Tiger this season to have consecutive multi-point games when he assisted on Aman's goal in the third period. The lead was short-lived, however, as UConn's Spencer Naas evened it up just 18 seconds later.
Â
That was all the Huskies (5-10-4) could get past CC goalie
Tyler Marble, who continued his outstanding play in the net. After making a career-high 48 saves last Saturday at Providence, Marble turned away 23 of 24 shots Tuesday night, including several in the third period when CC took three straight penalties. Â Â
Â
"(Marbs) made some great saves on the penalty kill," said Haviland. "Especially when we were up 3-1 in the third."
Â
Colorado College (4-14-1) outshot UConn, 35-24, marking the first time since Nov. 22 at Air Force that the Tigers had an advantage in that category. Taft led all players with seven shots, followed by Slavin, Aman and
Cody Bradley (one assist) with five apiece. Nass attempted a team-high four shots for UConn.
Â
The Tigers are idle this weekend and will return to action on Friday, Jan. 16 against Nebraska Omaha in the first of a two-game series at The Broadmoor World Arena.
