The Tigers came out looking to avenge Friday night's 6-3 defeat and things were looking good as CC put three goals on the board in the second period. After UMass forward Dominic Trento was called for a five-minute boarding major, freshman
Trey Bradley opened the scoring with his second goal in as many games after sending a slapshot from just above the right circle past UMass netminder Nic Renyard at the 6:05 mark. Sophomore
Teemu Kivihalme and freshman
Tanner Ockey assisted on the play. It was Ockey's first career point.
Â
Following another UMass penalty, sophomore
David Radke followed suit with a 5-on-3 goal less than three minutes later for the first tally of his career. Fellow frosh
Ben Israel (first career point) found his teammate at the top of the slot and Radke send a shot past a sprawling Renyard. Junior captain
Sam Rothstein also collected an assist on the play.
Â
Kivihalme then posted his first goal of the season with just 1:18 remaining in the second period when he took a pass from freshman
Andrew Farny, weaved pass three UMass players and put shot over Renyard's right shoulder from just in front of the net. The Tigers outshot UMass 19-8 in the middle frame and took a 3-0 lead into the second intermission.
Â
UMass' Shane Walsh changed that very quickly in the final period. Walsh cut the lead to 3-1 with a slapshot from the right circle that eluded CC freshman netminder
Jacob Nehama just 18 seconds into the third. After a slashing penalty by CC's
Tanner Ockey at the 56-second mark, Walsh fed Steven Iacobellis for a goal at the 2:17 mark, then scored the game-tying goal 18 seconds later.
Â
Austin Plevy, who notched a hat trick for the Minutemen on Friday, broke the tie at the 16:53 mark after putting home a rebound after an original shot by Callum Fryer. CC did everything it could to get its fourth goal, but Renyard stopped all 20 shots in the third period, including a couple by freshman
Trevor Gooch from point-blank range in the final two minutes, and finished the game with 45 saves. Nehama, meanwhile, made 34 in his career debut. Gooch led all players with seven shots.
Â
"We needed to gain back the momentum after their first goal and just couldn't," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "Our penalty kill was pretty good tonight but we still just need to learn how to win."
Â
The Tigers, who are 0-2 for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign, travel to Lowell, Mass., next weekend for a two-game series against UMass-Lowell. Â Â
