Nehama's 52 Saves Not Quite Enough

Box Score | Highlights | Coach Haviland Post-Game Press Conference

Despite 52 saves from freshman goalie Jacob Nehama, the Colorado College hockey team allowed a goal in the final three minutes and dropped a 3-2 decision to ninth-ranked UMass-Lowell Friday night at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass.

Ryan McGrath scored the game-winning goal with a wrister from the slot with 2:44 remaining in the third period, but the story of the game was Nehama, who made just his second career start. He kept the Tigers in the game with 16 saves in the first period and 23 in the second. His 52 saves were the most in one game by a CC goalie since Judd Lambert made 60 in a 1-0 four-overtime victory over Wisconsin on March 8, 1997.

"He (Nehama) was spectacular tonight," Colorado College head coach Mike Haviland said. "I feel bad for him because the final goal was a wrister that had eyes and ended up in the back of the net."

Freshman Trevor Gooch opened the scoring with his second goal of the season just 4:29 into the game. Gooch took a centering pass from fellow freshman Trey Bradley and sent a rocket past UML goalie Kevin Boyle. Senior Cody Bradley also assisted on the play, marking the first time since March 9, 2012 that a set of brothers earned a point on the same Colorado College goal (Jaden and Rylan Schwartz).

The River Hawks (2-0) scored the equalizer at the 8:20 mark with a power-play goal by Joe Gambardella, who took a pass from Adam Chapie and flew down the left wing. His initial shot was stopped by Nehama but Gambardella knocked in the rebound.

UML's Nick Master scored a power-play goal of his own at the 7:33 mark of the second period with a shot that snuck past Nehama on the short side from just below the right circle to make it a 2-1 game.

Cody Bradley evened things up at 2-2 with his first goal of the season on a breakaway at 7:31 of the third period. Junior captain Sam Rothstein gathered the puck at center ice and found Bradley streaking down the right side and he put a shot above Boyle's right shoulder.

The Tigers (0-3) were stymied on the power play, unable to convert any of their four chances. The River Hawks, meanwhile, were 2-for-7 and had 15 shots with the extra man. The Tigers mustered just 18 shots for the entire game and Boyle had 16 saves.

"Lowell is a very good team that is four lines deep," Haviland said. "When we are tied 2-2 in the final minutes, we need to find a way to win the game."

The same two teams play again Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m. (ET).
