CC Drops 3-1 Decision to San Diego State

Box Score Colorado College played one of its best games of the season on Sunday against San Diego State University.

Unfortunately, the Tigers were not rewarded with an appropriate result.

Angela Mitchell struck for a pair of goals early in the second half and the Aztecs held on for a 3-1 victory at Stewart Field.

"I thought we played really well," head coach Geoff Bennett said. "We played a tactic we hadn't played before and our kids did an unbelievable job following the tactical plan.

"When you look at the game and how San Diego State likes to play, we completely took them out of their rhythm and made them a direct team."

SDSU caught a break in the 10th minute when an unintentional touch led to a breakaway. Sophomore goalkeeper Louisa Mackenzie came off her line to stop Aliyah Utush's first shot, but the rebound went straight back to the sophomore forward who scored in an open net.

Early in the second half, Mitchell worked through the Tiger defense at the top of the box and sent a low crossing shot back to the right side of the net.

A little more than eight minutes later, the sophomore forward took a crossing pass from Utush and scored her eighth goal of the season from eight yards in the center of the box.

"Unfortunately, we gave up a couple of goals today that were a bit unlucky," Bennett said. "The first one goes off a kid's toe and goes for a through ball. Louisa makes a big save on a breakaway and they knock in a rebound. Then they score on a quick little set piece."

CC broke up the shutout in the 85th minute after senior midfielder Sarah Schweiss was pulled down while working around the Aztec defense on the right side of the penalty area.

Freshman midfielder Clara Richter converted on the first penalty kick of her career with a low shot to the right side.

Both teams launched 15 shots and earned a pair of corner kicks.

Mackenzie stopped five shots for the Tigers, who slipped to 7-11-1 and 5-5-0 in the Mountain West.

SDSU's Melanie Vaughn made four saves, including one in the 75th minute after Richter got behind the Aztec defense after taking a through ball from Schweiss.

San Diego State improved to 13-4-0 overall and clinched the MW regular-season crown with a 9-1-0 conference record.

"We played a really good game today and it's unfortunate we didn't get anything out of it," Bennett said. "We can build on this.

"We've been saying 'get to 18 points and six wins in conference' and we have one more game to do that. We played with drive and desire. If we play like that on Friday night, I like our chances."

Colorado College closes out the regular season on Friday night at Air Force.
